What Happens When Two Substances Collide

Despite fighting a fever, Andrew Bird pulled out a wonderfully expressive show last night at Toad’s Place Richmond. Bird thrives on the re-creation of his music in live venues saying that he “deliberately forgets what’s on the record” so that the performances are never quite the same. Building on that wall of sound that he desires, Bird plays with accomplished musicians Martin Dosh and Jeremy Ylvisaker and a steady stream of looping. The frenetic energy that he brings to the stage is coupled with a finely honed ability towards perfect pitch. That is, his vocals are amazing and his whistling vibrato sounds as hauntingly pure as a Theremin!

If you have been living under a rock and haven’t had the pleasure of hearing Andrew Bird, I’m including a few mp3s for your necessary orientation.
